First Touch

From record-breakers to rule-benders, this week we’ve seen sports’ innovation challenged as much as celebrated.

At Le Mans, Ferrari crossed the line first - but that hasn’t dominated the headlines, BoP (Balance of Performance) has. With questions raised about fairness, engineering, and whether tech-led parity is blunting competitive edge, this a conversation that isn’t going away (see more later!)

In America, FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup is under fire too. Critics are arguing about many things around it but for the tracksuits out there, the most compelling topic is the type of player it is rewarding. Coming at the end of a long, long season of football, will the stars be the ones who can grind through the calendar rather than those whose flair lights up the pitch?

Elsewhere, Armand Duplantis reminded us that not all progress is contentious. The Swede cleared 6.28m to break the pole vault world record for the 15th time. And yes, most of the previous records were his too. Rumoured to have cleared a few more cms in training, we can probably expect him to add a record for the athlete who has beaten most of his own records.

Next week, tune in to Amazon to watch history in the making as Faith Kipyegon lines up to become the first woman to run a sub-four-minute mile in Nike’s Breaking 4. But it’s not just about pace. In my latest Leader we look at if this is a defining moment for women’s sport, or another case of marketing making the moment?

One thing’s clear - sport never stays still. And neither does the innovation shaping it. It’s time to Go Deeper…

Leader: Fast Feet or Design Feat?

Faith Kipyegon is set to break the four-minute mile - a historic moment, but one dressed in carbon-plated kit and brand choreography. The record won’t count officially, but the headlines definitely will. So…is this a sporting milestone or a perfectly timed product launch?
